1/25/2012 - Family Theater - Adrian - Joe Vogel
I've found the Family Theatre mentioned in issues of Michigan Film Review (scan available at Google Books) as early as 1917, along with three other theaters then operating in Adrian: the Crescent Theatre, the Garden Theatre, and the Opera House.

The Family Theatre was located at 136 S. Main Street. The building is still standing, and is currently listed for sale on the web site of Edward Surovell Realtors, Ann Arbor (Google the theater's address to find the listing. There's a photo.

) Newspaperarchive. com has many issues of the Adrian Daily Telegram from 1975 and 1976 with ads for the Studio South I and Studio South II, so the theater was twinned in 1975 or earlier..
1/25/2012 - Conant Theater - Hamtramck - Raph
My Grandfather owned the Conant. I did not have a photo of it and I so appreciate those posted. He also owned the Martha Washington theatre. It no longer stands.
1/24/2012 - Riviera Theater - Detroit - Cari Smith
My Grandmother Laurine Bowen White was the Manager of the Rivera Theatre.

And my mother Patricia White and aunts Sue and Faye also worked for the theatre along with my uncle Richard. Before it became a motion picture theatre they hosted Broadway musicals like My Fair Lady with Judi Garland. I know that the first time my mother ever met Jerry Lewis, she accidently walked into his dressing room to find him in his boxer shorts. lol My mother Patricia said she the theatre was her second home, she spent so much time there.

She worked the concession and whatever else my Grandmother needed her to do. When my grandmother was alive, I remember her telling stories about Miss Judy Garland, and other actors like Jerry Lewis. I have told my mother of this site in hopes she can tell a few stories and share some old memories. Now that she see's my comment she probably will.

1/23/2012 - Silver Cinemas - Roseville - C. Messerschmidt
I worked in the Macomb Mall theaters starting in January of 1990 when it was owned by General Cinema.

At that time the district manager, Paul Paquette, had his office upstairs and the theater manager was Mr. Jones. I worked there again for several years when it was re-opened under the Cinemark banner. Other people I remember from back then include Rick M.

, Jon, Milton, and Andrew. I worked pretty much every position in the theater and remember spending many late night splicing together the Friday openings in the projection booth. When Cinemark took over, the manager and I replaced a lot of seats and ran track lighting. Mr.

Paquette became manager of the Showcase Sterling Heights on Van Dyke. Lena (wife of the infamous Harry) worked box office there as well..
1/22/2012 - Star Theater - Brooklyn - Niki
Is there any chance of the Star opening this year or is there still just to much work to be done? Thanks :)).
1/22/2012 - Tri-City Motor Speedway - Auburn - chris davis
In late June of 2011 the track was reopened as a 3/8 mile dirt track and had an awesome year.

The new owners completely rebuilt the track moving the new dirt track to the back side of the old 1/2 mile. Classes running are late models, sportsman,IMCA modifieds, and street stocks on a weekly basis. They had some special shows to. They were winged 1/4 midgets, trucks, and open modifieds.

1/20/2012 - Playland Park - Flint - Craig
I believe I singlehandedly kept Playland South in business in the early 1980's. I dropped a ton of money there every weekend on videogames and pinball. It was a good place because not only did they have every hot videogame, it was safe. And it had a great stereo system.
1/20/2012 - Maple Art Theaters - Bloomfield Hills - jt
According to an article in the Detroit Free Press, The Maple is due to close at the end of the month when Landmark Theaters pulls out. WDIV reported on the same day that it will remain open, under a different operator, who said that the operation will be upgraded with bigger screens, digital projection, and new seats.
1/20/2012 - Star Theater - Brooklyn - Josh Mitoska
The Building is nearing completion, only 12 years behind schedule. We would have been ready this year but all the 35mm equipment we bought last year will now be needed to be upgraded to full digital.
1/20/2012 - Pontiac Silverdome - Pontiac - Mike Duford
I wish the new owners of the Silverdome would have another dirt late model race. I was there in 82 and thought it was awesome. They could probably get a good size crowd.

1/16/2012 - Flint Cinema - Flint - Michael
I remember seeing many movies here.

I think Return of the Jedi was the last movie to play there. They milked that crowd until it died down. They closed and the plastic sign had RETURN OF THE JEDI for quite a while after the building closed. They were up so long that they began to fall down and decay.

I also remember after it closed a friend and I (15 at the time) noticed the back exit doors were ajar. We went in several times. It was sad. Vandals ripped the screen to shreds and stole the speakers from the wall.

It was very creepy to be in a dark, ransacked theater. It was a nice theater for it's time. I saw Airplane! there. Loved it.

1/11/2012 - State Theater - Traverse City - Jaxon Film Fest
Documentary filmmaker and social activist Michael Moore said a fund-raising effort to restore the historic State Theater in Traverse City has exceeded its goal of a half-million dollars by $40,000.

Original article Filmmaker Michael Moore rescues historic movie theater CNHI News Service TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — Documentary filmmaker and social activist Michael Moore said a fund-raising effort to restore the historic State Theater here has exceeded its goal of a half-million dollars by $40,000. He said donations were made by individuals and matched by grants from Consumers Energy ($125,000) and Rotary Charities ($50,000). It was a good combination of those who can afford to give large grants such as Consumers, Rotary and myself, and those who can give $5, said Moore.

We raised $5,000 just on the canister on the counter. The fund drive was sponsored by the nonprofit organization that Moore formed several years ago to keep the downtown theater open and to stage the acclaimed Traverse City Film Festival. The money will be used to keep the organization solvent, renovate the theater and provide 25-cent matinees and free movies throughout the year. Moore was amazed the fund drive was so successful in a short time in view of northern Michigan's struggling economy.

But I'm not surprised because I know the community's feelings toward this theater, he said. There's a real sense of ownership. Moore said the theater has sort of become the town square of Traverse City, a resort community located on Grand Traverse Bay off Lake Michigan. Moore is a native of Michigan and has a home near Traverse City.

His documentaries often deal with social issues. For example, Bowling for Columbine, which won the 2002 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, looked at the culture of guns and violence in the U. S. , with the Columbine High School massacre of 1999 as a backdrop.
