The ticket booth is now gone. The only thing standing is the marquee. I'm sure that will be headed to the scrap yard also. Sad to see it go.

They are going to turn it into a subdivisionCHASSELL - Chassell Township and Chassell Township Schools are moving forward with an effort to attract more families with students to the area. At this month''s Chassell Township meeting, the board approved changing the zoning of 17 acres adjacent to the school and owned by the school district from industrial to residential. The plan is to develop the land, part of which was formerly the Chassell Drive-In movie theater, into residential lots as a joint effort between a developer, the township and the school district, said Chassell Superintendent Mike Gaunt.

My dad is always telling stories about going to the drive-in in Chassell with “old Moe”. He would drive the bunch of them down there and after the cartoon was over he would go smelt dipping in the creek behind the drive-in. I guess if you talked during the cartoon he would pop you one in the mouth and tell you had to walk back to Trimountain. One time some Tech students were screwing around a told “old Moe” he was dipping the wrong way. He nicely set his net down, came out of the water, threw all of them in the water, and them nicely wadded back into the water to continue smelt dipping.

I always ask why would go with “old Moe” if he was so mean. The answer I got “In the 50’s not everybody had a car. ” He said the “Miller Brothers” would show movies outside at the school in the summer and in the back of the store in the winter.

CHASSELL — Chassell Township Schools and Chassell Township are trying a new way to get more families to move into the school district. The two entities recently split the cost of a feasibility study for a residential development on 17 acres the district owns adjacent to the school property, part of which was formerly the Hiawatha Drive-In movie theater.

Here are the pictures of the Hiawatha DIT that I found in a 1988 book on Chassell MI, that I found at the Portage Lake District Library in Houghton, MI. The aerial shot is from the 1980s. It is interesting to note that after the DIT closed the entrance road to 41 was altered back to where the street on the left is. The railroad tracks have also since been removed. The marquee shot was taken in March 1958.

The Hiawatha opened on June 13, 1952. It might have closed on September 8, 1986, but I dont have access to the Houghton Daily Mining Gazette film for 1987. No ads appeared in 1988.

A recent site inspection revealed that the marquee, ticket booth, speaker poles, ramps and screen foundation remain. Very cool woodsy setting.
