Flat Rock Speedway
Entry Date: 11/19/2009 - RODNEY SHALLOW
: Many of my family members raced at Flat Rock Speedway in the 50''s. In fact many of the vintage photo''s on your web site I can identify. My aunt, Gladys Hood, is the woman in the back seat closest to you in the photo of the Powder Puff girls pace car photos. I have a photo that I would like to submit of my uncle, Jake Hood, who won many races and at least 1 championship at Flat Rock, including the figure 8 races. My mother was dis-qualified as a powder puff racer at Flat Rock when it was discovered that she was pregnant, with me. Thus the name Rod.

Entry Date: 11/17/2009 - Jennifer Bauer
: Exterior view of the Lyric Theater, located at 17 N. Gratiot Ave. The R.C. Ullrich Hardware, at 15 N. Gratiot, is visible at left. The Lyric was built in 1913 by H.H. Lichtig, and opened to the public on June 25, 1913. The building was razed in August, 1929 to make way for the construction of an S.S. Kresge store.
Onondaga Dragway
Entry Date: 11/17/2009 - Jon Lundberg
: Another great Michigander - Dave Crane - has just reported the passing of Ken Sears following a long cancer battle. This is really sad.
Three generations of the Sears family were involved with Onondaga Dragway.
Ken''s dad, his brother Hal, their wives and kids. Family are good, decent, straight-forward people who watched other Michigan drag strips launch and decided to do their own. They did it and for a long time Onondaga was successful. It opened in the fall of 1961.
The Greek called one day. He''d had a falling out with Gil Kohn at Detroit Dragway over a run by the Loukas/Leffler coupe and had - on purpose - mowed down Gil''s lights. Said to Ken Sears, "If you pay me X, I''ll be there in 2 hours and come off the trailer at 200." Ken came to me asking, "Can you hold the crowd for another 2 hours?" This was at 4:00 PM on a hot Sunday afternoon. My response was, "To see the Greek come off the trailer and turn this track''s first 200?" "You bet!" I did and he did. That was 1963.
Lotsa good memories from that place. Among them that this close-knit family of average means invested in a dream and made it work. This is a sad day for me.

Commerce Drive-In Theater
Entry Date: 11/15/2009 - E:
I worked for AMC Theatres in the early 90s. The Commerce drive-in location was being seriously considered for the first 20 in the Detroit area (would have beat Star Southfiled by about a year)... plans were shelved when UA built the Commerce 14 just down the road. The Detroit market was never a high priority for AMC.
Bob-Lo Island
Entry Date: 11/15/2009 - David Baskerville
: I am sorry to see that the park is no more. I have always talked to my kids about the time I went to the park with my relitives in the 80''s while visiting. It was a wonderful time. During my family''s next visit to Michigan, we will search out another park to visit.
Northern Michigan Dragway
Entry Date: 11/15/2009 - Al Larsen
: Hello Everyone, i am trying to find info/pictures from Manistee County Dragway from 1971. My father had a 1955 Chevy D/Gas that he raced mostly at M37 Dragway in Brohman, but he also raced it at Manistee County Dragway in Kaleva. I have found some of his old time slips, and the only legible one from Manisty County Dragway is dated 7/5/71. If anyone knows of someone who may have been a track photographer, if they had one, or of someone who was going to the track in 71 that may have taken pictures, please contact me. My email address is w_o_t_speedshop@yahoo.com I do have a couple of pictures of his car, I could email them or if you would like to view them they are posted on the M37 Dragway page on this site. Thanks in advance for any info. Al Larsen.

: Hi everyone. I''m looking to find the names of the track champions at Tri-City (Auburn) from before 1990. Specifically Tommy Maier and Ed Howe. I''ve got fan pages set up for both on RacersReunion.com and would appreciate any help. I''m really missing from about 1973 to 1987. I plan on talking with Tom in the next week and a half. Please e-mail me privately at banchoffpj@gmail.com.
Thanks,

Laurel Park 10
Entry Date: 11/14/2009 - Unknown
: I was on the original staff of the LP10 when it opened in 1989 and worked there for many years. Until the megaplexes came on line in the mid-90s, the LP10 was the highest-grossing location in AMC''s norteast division and consistently in the top 10 of the entire company. It was a great place to work and it is very sad to see that it is now closed... too bad they couldn''t have let it stay open for two more weeks so it could make it to its official 20 year anniversary.
In the entire time I was there (1989-1996) I only remember the satellite concession stands opened once, and that was during "Another 48 Hours." The problems were two-fold: first, as stated before, the line would block the hallway; second the LP10 had notoriously thin walls and the sound of the popper was disruptive to the auditorium on the other side of the concession stand.
The satellites were closed pretty much for good in the summer of 1991 when our district manager moved to the LP and they renovated our main stockroom and employee break room into a suite of offices. The satellites were then primarily used as storage rooms from then on. Even at our peak in the mid-90s when we were selling out all 10 auditoriums for the entire night by 5:00 PM, there was never any serious consideration of reopening the satellite stands.

Mt. Clemens Race Track
Entry Date: 11/10/2009 - Eric Schulz
: For you old timers (race time 1952-1960) you may remember my dad Al Schulz. He teamed up with a guy named Sid Keller and produced some pretty good race cars. The number ''000'' Dodge , Plymouths and sprint cars. You may remember the sprint for the monster Chrysler Hemis he ran. He was known for his ability to get a car to handle and was able to get cars of lower classes to compete with the higher powered ones. He won a number of championships in the mid 1950s at Mt. Clemens and Motor City.
He past away October 28th. He and Sid had held their freindship all these years and I know Sid along with all of us will deeply miss him.
His first race car was purchased by my grandfather from Marion Adams. It was a T roadster that Iggy Katona had built and driven to many wins (the T-3 car) Lucky me!! I still have that body. It''s something I could never part with.

Mid-Michigan Motorplex
Entry Date: 11/7/2009 - Cindy Schroeder
: Hi,
My name is Cindy Schroeder.
My request is to any drag professional, announcer, etc.
I''m writing a true crime book that has nothing to do with drag racing, well almost nothing.
In the mid-seventies there was a drag strip in Kansas City, Kansas or Kansas City Missouri. The drag strip had three owners. One owner was Bob Harmon with Harmon Industries out of Missouri.
The murderer in my story tried to swindle the owners in an effort to gain the drag strip.
Does anyone know the name, at that time, of the drag strip and it''s location?
Was Bob Harmon ever part owner of the Kansas City International Raceway, maybe the raceway had a different name back in the seventies?
Thanks to anyone out there that can help me.

Kellogg Field
Entry Date: 11/5/2009 - carl chapman
: Kellogg feild was and still is a airport. In the fiftys 56,57 ?
drags were held on the west side on a unused taxi way.
To get to the strip you had to drive outside the Air Nat. Guard
Base fence off Dickman rd. It was a one lane dirt road.
I think races were held on sat. and maybe sun.
Anyone could race if you passed checks and qualified in
your class. Seems it only lasted a couple of years, then they
moved to Martin.

Oak Drive-In Theater
Entry Date: 11/4/2009 - Walter Marchek
: I was eight years old at the time It would have been in 1965 and the featured movie was "Beach Blanket Bingo".
There was an anouncement over the speakers that there were some guest extras from the movie that were going to appear during intermission, at the concessions stand.
I remember my older sister and I were heading (running) to the concessions stand with excitement of meeting some actors? from the movie.
Only then to find myself running into a wire stretched between two posts along the perimeter outside the concessions stand and at just the height being at my neck level and finding myself on the ground.
Dont remember much after that other than we had to leave before the second featured movie and I was taken to the local Beaumont hospital to be examined. Nothing serious , just a red mark on my neck.
Motor City Dragway
Entry Date: 11/2/2009 - Dan Hawley
: I went by mcd on Sunday Nov.1st what a shame.I set my odometer and it was 21 miles from my house in port Huron.then after thinking of the track for a few hours and thought it would be nice to have a reunion, get together,of the guys and gals that used to race or just spectate. I thought maybe get a hold of the owner ask if we could clean a spot at the track or rent a hall to show pictures, movies,or just plain get a chance to see the people you raced with or watched.Just an idea.

Jackson Motor Speedway
Entry Date: 11/2/2009 - Marty Blume
: Rick...Conan "Moose" Myers was from Ft Wayne, Ind. He was never a regular driver at Jackson. He would show up for invitationals and other special races. With his Maroon ''55 Chevy convertible number 0 he did hold the track record for several years. "Moose" was one of the top drivers in the midwest and a threat to win at any race that he appeared at from the mid sixties into the early seventies. Hope this gives you a few answers that you are looking for. Marty Blume
Regent Theater
Entry Date: 11/2/2009 - Roger Balcer
: I worked at the RKO Regent the year it was closed in1964. I was the last usher ever to be hired or to work at the theater. That was 45 years ago, I was just seventeen years old.
The Regent was one of the last of the grand old dames in a time when most of the indoor theaters were sizing down. The manager at the the time was a man named John Ottabacher I believe , he was as gruff and unbending as Capt. Blye of the Bounty. The assistant manager was a young fellow a year or two my senior and a friend of mine Don Dodds, he got me the job.
The theater was five stories high with a bowling alley on the 5th floor which had been closed and locked up for years due to never being updated to automatic pin setters or an elevator. I never did actually see the bowling alley due to being on strict orders from the Capt. to stay the hell out . However, Don had been there and discribed it to me, he said all the old balls, pins an furniture was still there.
I learned about the old balls first hand one night. One of my duties was to check he balconies which were off limits. Kids my age would sneak up there to make out ,which was against Blye''s rules. This particular evening while checking, a racket started outside on the fire escape so I unlocked and opened the door, stepped out and was promptly knocked down by a herd of bowling balls. A group of local boys had broken in and started to roll the balls down the fire escape with the idea of selling them.
The theater had a multi-level stage with dressing rooms and second and third story stage doors that opened into thin air, a band pit and I seem to remember trapdoors in the stage floor.
It was a great and mysterious place for a young fellow to have his first real job, at $ 1.00 per hour.
The section of Cresent Street that the Regent was on no longer exists. I believe it was about were Caulder Plaza is now. I''m glad I have those memories, I miss those good old days. Roger Balcer
