General Information:

I attended this theater a few times before it closed in 1986. Like an idiot I failed to take photos of it then. By the time it occurred to me to do so, it was an empty lot. Fortunately we did dig up one photo of the marquee which is below. Like many drive-ins, the Walake was featuring "Hard R" exploitation movies in the early 1980's. Interestingly, the mentions in the newspapers in the few years before it closed in 1986 were using "Walled Lake Drive-In", which in reality was an older DI right across the street from Walled Lake itself. There was a haunted house attraction running at the Walake at the end also.

i grew up in Wixom, MI in the 50's, 60's and 70's. When i was very little there was a drive in theater on Wixom Road where the Baptist Church is now, across from the old cemetery. the Baptist church purchased the drive in property and held it for years before they built the building that is now there ad the parsonage. They may have some information that can lead you to photos and the owner's name. I believe it was owned by the same owner of the drive in located in Waled lake, MI. Let me know if you ind any photos. Thanks.

My whole family worked at the Walake Drive-In: Myself, my husband, my father,
my In-Laws, my children, my brother. I have some pictures of my children in the projection booth, but nothing else. It was a happy time for all of us. We were terribly sad to see it go. Note from Webmaster - Please send any pics you may have, we need new drive-in content!!!!

Wanted: photo of the Walake marquee and/or screen tower. Someone in the Walled Lake area has to have photos of this joint! Can any former employees or managers help us preserve the history of the Walake Drive-In? Any photos would be acceptable, regardless of condition.

The marquee for the Walake Drive-In in Walled Lake stood for several years after the theater was torn down. I remember my school bus going past it every morning (1984-1985) and one morning, we were all shocked to see the marquee was lit up! It never happened again, though, and soon after it was removed.(Garrett Jamieson 1-23-03)
