General Information:

From Cinema Treasures

The Starlite Drive-In was opened on July 30, 1953 with Betty Hutton in “Annie Get Your Gun”. It was operated by the Soo Amusement Co. I never went to this this drive-in.

I moved to the Soo in 1991 and it had already closed down. I was driving around one day on the outskirts of town and found the ruins of the place. The screen had collapsed and the place was overgrown with weeds but the marquee still stood out front and the projection house/concession stand was intact and accessible. Although it had obviously been vandalized, most of the equipment was still inside and the place felt like it was frozen in time to the date of it’s last screening which I recall from one of the ledger books had been about three or four years earlier.

I remember feeling a sense of sadness that a place that had entertained countless people for so long was now forgotten and rotting away.

I remember being a "two-striper" Airman at nearby Kincheloe Air Force Base and going to this drive-in back in 1972 as a 20-year old. We would pack a car load of Air Force "cops" with girlfriends into our 383 Roadrunners or 350 Nova SSs and take our own "refreshments" along. One night, we watched the movie "M*A*S*H" until the fog rolled in off Lake Superior and you couldnt even see the screen from the front row! Thanks for the memories.

The old drive-in has been completely obliterated by what looks to be a truss company.

Screen is down, ticket booth, snack bar, and marquee remain. (Darryl Burgess/Outdoor Moovies 10-8-99)
