I worked here during my senior year of high school (1997), probably from about January through August of that year. I was a concession worker. I hated the job, but then again, I was a teenager and probably hated every job I had. I miss the old Abbey now. We never got anything as big as the Star Theaters did (which is, ironically, now an AMC), but we did better than the Oakland Mall one.

Things would play for months. I remember Aretha Franklin coming in one night to see The Preacher's Wife. I went on to a part-time career as a film critic, and so it was a great pleasure to serve popcorn to Susan Stark (who used to be a Detroit News critic). I feel a lot of nostalgia for the Abbey.

The theaters were clean. The popcorn was good. I remember seeing the giant rolls of film (now everything everywhere is digital).

In 73,74 not long too long after it opened the Abbey 123 as was back then they set some sort of record by continuously playing American Graffiti for over a year. I was a little kid back then and thought it must have been some sort of dirty movie because mom would never take me to see it. Who would thought back then George would go on to create the biggest movie franchise and the Abbey would become a really nice computer store.

I worked here in 1998-99. I probably have pix somewhere. Not too much to tell except horror stories of a theatre that time forgot. By the end things were in a sad state of disrepair, and the film bookers thought we were closed so they just didnt give us anything worthwhile! We had October Sky for six months (and I dont believe wed even gotten it first-run! I used to drive across the street to the Star to pick up the prints they were losing!) Technicolor tried to pick that stupid movie up (while it was still on screen) more times than I can even count! Ah, memories.

The Abbey was and early neighborhood multi-plex that saw its heyday in the 70s and 80s. It eventually closed due to competition from larger theatres that were being built in the area. The building was converted to a computer store thereafter.
