Longtime Midland movie theater Studio M has announced it is closing it doors on Dec. 1. In a press release, Valley Plaza Sales Associate Maggie Swanson stated: “We have unfortunately made the decision that Studio M must close down. Our doors will be closing on Dec 1, 2013 and we would like to thank all of our loyal customers over the years. Our staff thanks all of you for your dedicated loyalty to our theater. The movie times and listings will stay the same until the closing date. ”

At its inception, Studio M filled a void in the indoor theater market. The Frolic Theater building at the corner of Main and Gordon had been demolished in 1959. Two years later, in 1961, Midland Theater, on the Circle, was closed before being converted to Circle Bowling. The first movie shown in Studio M was “Where Were You When the Lights Went Out?” starring Doris Day, Robert Morse, Patrick O’Neal, Steve Allen, Jim Backus and Pat Paulsen on Sunday, Sept. 15, 1968. The following Wednesday, “Never a Dull Moment,” starring Dick Van Dyke and Edward G Robinson, opened in the 900-seat theater. “It is just not making the money that it used to,” said Swanson by phone on Tuesday. “Because we run off an old school projector, it is hard to find films. It is definitely a sad day. ”

May 1992 saw the opening of the Midland Cinemas near the Midland Mall. What does the future hold for the Studio M building? “Our sales department will definitely try to push for concerts because it is already set up for that,” said Swanson. “They might put some meetings in there or conferences, and unique things like that. ” Studio M employs three people and is part of Valley Plaza, which includes a Best Western Motel, Plaza Suites and Four Seasons Aquatic Health & Aquatics Club & RV Park.
