I was driven to this movie every Saturday matinee by my dad with my school buddies and my brother Bob throughout the 50's. Saw every matinee monster movie and Elvis's movies with my parents. Great times.

I went to the Berkley Theater very often in the mid- to late 1950s as a kid growing up in Berkley. Only cost a quarter I think back then. So many great memories there. Favorite movies: Science fiction and horror flicks, of course. !.

Really enjoyed that place. Went there pretty often, matinees, especially circa 1970-73, maybe once or twice in later years, but probably first saw a movie there in '64 or so. I remember the clock with the neon light around it that was near one of the exit areas, as well as the mirrors in the foyer, as you went up a aisle to the top, you could see the movie projected in reverse in the long mirror. Saw everything from noisy Godzilla movies to nature documentaries to Disney to The Poseidon Adventure there.

I can't count the number of Saturdays that my parents would drop us off for the matinee show rain, shine or snow. We would always get there too late and end up at the back of the line of kids that ran down the side of the building which meant that with all the shuffling and shoving to get in, we always missed the first few minutes of the show.

Hi -Just wanted to let you know that the Berkley Theater photos, from Old Night Shot on down were taken by me on the final nite the theater was open, Sept. 26, 1993. I covered the closing for the City of Berkley''s cable TV station, WBRK. Somewhere in the city''s archives is a TV show touring the building for a last time. Contact City Hall for more information.

Please add the Berkley to your Lost Theaters page. I miss the old girl.

I remember peddling my bike up to the Berkley Theater back in 1964/1965. I was only 5 at the time and my brother was 8 (completely safe back then). We used to catch matinees on Saturday for about 25 cents. I do remember that at the back of the auditorium they had these drapes that covered windows. My brother took an ashtray filled with sand and knocked it through the window opening during a show - and then we RAN!!!!!! Man, what a great place back then.

Too bad it could not have been revived.

It used to be a regular thing to go to the Berkley Theater on Sunday afternoons for me and my friends back in the late 50's, early 60's. My mom would give me 25 cents for snacks. It was such a fun place to go. I particularly remember trying to sit in the cry room just for fun, and I also remember the odd-shaped claustrophobic phone room, where sometimes I would go to call my mom to come pick me up. Lots of memories of the Berkley Theater and am sorry it closed.

I worked as a usher at the berkley from july of 1987 to late summer 1989. It was a great 2nd run theatre. sat 851 and we used to sell out quite a few shows of dirty dancing, cocktail, etc. The one house theatre had upstairs bathrooms with a cry room up the ladies room side for families. When the AMC Towne (which I worked at after the berkley) went 2nd run in the early 90s ( dances with wolves won best pic the night before the towne went 2nd) the berkley tried to run head to head and then tried to run a few 1st runs but could not hold out when rite aid came a calling.

Mr Komer did not want to close but had little choice. Shame such a great theatre went away with only the box office, marquee and some seats in a little part of the lobby remaining. This theatre would have been a great renovation for the sub. detroit revival of the late 90s.

I remember going to the Berkley in the early 1980s with my first steady girlfriend, who lived nearby. I remember how threadbare the interior looked with painted cinderblock walls, but also how charming, seeming right out of the 1940s. It was easy to imagine couples and kids walking from their homes to see a matinee or night show, and I feel weve lost this with our 16-screen cinemaplexes.

Opened in 1940, the Art Deco Berkley could seat 851 and screened first run features. Its sleek and curving facade featured a tall blade marquee with the theater's name on each side. By the late 70s, the Berkley had switched over to second-run fare. In the early 90s, the theater was showing a mixture of first and second-run films. Unfortunately, this beautiful neighborhood movie house has since closed.

The marquee and facade remain but the auditorium is gone. Sadly, the interior has been converted to a Rite-Aid drug store.
