6/13/2013 - John Halsey
My greatest memory was seeing Urban Cowboy at the Gaylord theatre in 1980 when I was 14 years old. I really liked the song, All Night Long from Joe Walsh, and saw the movie was rated PG, so it looked like a good show for the family to see. About 5 minutes into the movie there was quite a racy scene which prompted quite a stare from my mom. Shortly thereafter, my parents along with my younger brother, sister, and myself were heading to the exit. The Gaylord theatre had not been updated much (if at all) by the early 80's.

It had the old-fashioned chairs and concession stand immediately before the theatre entrance. A bit of a musty smell mixed with a blend of popcorn to create a unique aroma. Throughout the late 1970s- 80s, it would usually get a top movie fairly soon after release, but keep it there for weeks on end. In high school, while working at the nearby Sugar Bowl Restaurant, my friends and I would usually venture to Cheboygan or Traverse City to catch a newer release film.
