This place has quite the history. The basic story was it started out as Maple Lanes in September 1959 with 18 bowling lanes. The Camelot Inn was the bar/restaurant side of the business. By the early 1970s, a gentleman named Ben Bundo added some exotic dancers to the operation. As someone who has lived in Oakland County all of my life, I can say that topless bars and massage parlors tend to raise the ire of local residents as well as local and county law enforcement.
The introduction of disco dancing and exotic dancers (male and female) began a long series of battles with the officials and residents that ended up in court multiple times. Some of the talent ended up in the can a few times also. Mr Bundo ended up running for public office to further his cause. He was of the opinion he was operating a legal business and religious folks were prejudiced against him on moral grounds, although he came from a religious family and had no particular problem with church folk.
At one point he lost his liquor license and was operating as a totally nude joint. Bundo responded to that by re-opening 1 lane of bowling to keep the license. In the end, the place was closed and the old disco/flea market/restaurant/bowling alley was torn down in 2001. No matter what we all think of bars like this, most of us don't want them in our neighborhood if we're being honest. Today the lot sits empty but it used for the farmer's market. I remember this place having lived in that general area for many years although I never went in. In closing I will say one thing for Mr. Bundo, he was relentless.
