Opened in 1940, the Art Deco Berkley could seat 851 and screened first run features. Its sleek and curving facade featured a tall blade marquee with the theater's name on each side. By the late 70s, the Berkley had switched over to second-run fare. In the early 90s, the theater was showing a mixture of first and second-run films. Unfortunately, this beautiful neighborhood movie house has since closed.

Hi Just wanted to let you know that the Berkley Theater photos, from "Old Night Shot" on down were taken by me on the final nite the theater was open, Sept. 26, 1993. I covered the closing for the City of Berkley's cable TV station, WBRK. Somewhere in the city's archives is a TV show touring the building for a last time. Contact City Hall for more information. Please add the Berkley to your "Lost Theaters" page. I miss the old girl.

I worked as a usher at the berkley from july of 1987 to late summer 1989. It was a great 2nd run theatre. sat 851 and we used to sell out quite a few shows of dirty dancing, cocktail, etc. The one house theatre had upstairs bathrooms with a cry room up the ladies room side for families. When the AMC Towne (which I worked at after the berkley) went 2nd run in the early 90s ( dances with wolves won best pic the night before the towne went 2nd) the berkley tried to run head to head and then tried to run a few 1st runs but could not hold out when rite aid came a calling. Mr Komer did not want to close but had little choice. Shame such a great theatre went away with only the box office, marquee and some seats in a little part of the lobby remaining. This theatre would have been a great renovation for the sub. detroit revival of the late 90s.

The marquee and facade remain but the auditorium is gone. Sadly, the interior has been converted to a Rite-Aid drug store.
