Ontario-born Lysander R. Whiting settled here in North Branch Township in 1857 and operated a steam sawmill. The settlement was given a post office on Feb. 20, 1882, with storekeeper David Holm as its first postmaster. The post office was transferred to and renamed King's Mill on Dec. 4, 1883, but on Jan. 14, 1884, the Whiting post office was re-established, with Mr. Whiting as its postmaster, the office operating until Dec. 31, 1902 [Page; PO Archives)
