Tuscola County: here in Novesta Township the Grand Trunk Railroad came through in 1883, naming the station Bruce, for local landowner Elmer Bruce. Arthur Newton founded the village in 1884, naming it for his friend, Mr. Deford. Theron Spencer became its first postmaster on Jan. 21, 1884 (PM; GSM 18871.
