From Michigan Place Names
Hartford Cargill was the first settler in the area in 1836. Joshua Dart arrived in 1839, and when the township organized in 1842 he had it named for his friend, General EP. Gaines. When the D. & Mil. Railroad arrived in 18 its dept here was the first building in the town.
