General Information:

AKA Pomona Pavilion

This facility was built as the "Pomona Pavilion" in 1901 by a railway company and was one of the largest ballrooms in western Michigan. It had a capacity of 1000 people. A Mrs. Walter Stephenson purchased the hall from Frank Lockage in 1959. She became ill and in turn sold it to to Victor Huddleston in 1961. In 1963 the place was destroyed by fire. At the time of the fire, it was owned by Robert E. Lahey and operated by Alfred Lilly. They had planned on re-building after the fire as the loss was partially covered by insurance.

The fire photo caption from the paper provides a clue as to the location. It indicated the place was on Spring Lake. The Wharf Bar was also destroyed which was next door. I checked a 1955 aerial photo and found the building in the Fruitport area of Spring Lake. I confirmed it when I switched to the 1969 photo and the place was gone. I am using the address of the Fruitport Boat Launch as it sits pretty close to where the pavilion did. Next door is Pomona Park which is another clue.

The pavilion attracted all the big bands of the day and like many other pavilions also featured rock acts. A 1971 death notice for Louis Armstrong indicated he had played the pavilion. Another article from 1959 indicated Bill Haley and the Comets performed there as well. Other acts included Stan Kenton, Les Elgert and many others.
