Originally called East Town Mall, the center was home to dozens of businesses since its inception in 1977 east of Kalamazoo in Comstock Township. They included a large Kmart store and the Gull Road Cinema Five.
The Kmart closed in 2005. It was one of dozens in the discount department store chain locations to be closed nationwide over a period of two years. And the movie complex closed in Sept 2018. Its owners opened a new business, called Pop City Popcorn on March 1 at 346 S. Kalamazoo Mall in downtown Kalamazoo. In December, Menard Inc. purchased the property at an undisclosed price from the Eyde Co., of East Lansing.
The name of the 224,732-square-foot retail center was changed to Gull Crossing in the early 1990s after the Eyde Company bought the facility. Gull Crossing's main occupant, a Kmart store, closed in 2005.
