I rember the Outdoor Theatre my parents took me there when I was a kid in the early 80's then later on it was torn down to biuld Wicks Lumber then the building laid empty for several years after going out of buisness what a waste. The one the thing I remember that we did on a Satuerday was go to Kelly's Sportsland and in the late evening go to the Outdoor Theatre.

I wonder if anyone has a list of what movies were showing when? I have many fond memories of seeing films at the old U. S. 31 Outdoor Theater, including Ryan's Daughter with Summer of '42 (1971 or 1972), Gimme Shelter with Jimi Plays Berkeley (Nov. 30, 1974) and lots more. It would be interesting to see a list of films that were shown there.

My dad, Ben Mortenson, ran the 31 from 1958 to 1964 when it burned down. I have vague memories of getting free popcorn and watching Beach Blanket Bingo.

Having graduated Niles High School in 1959, you can bet I saw LOTS of flicks at the Niles Drive-In Theatre.
We had some "pet names" for the place which can''t be mentioned here but, suffice to say, it was a popular date spot for teens in it''s day.
Will never forget being one of about 12 guys who squeezed into the trunk of a 1954 Pontiac and snuck into the place. Still can''t believe we got away with it since the car was actually riding on the rear axle due to all the weight in the trunk! We unloaded in the back row of the theatre, then headed for the snack stand for Cokes!
Those were the good old days for sure.

Remember seeing "2001 A Space Odysey" here back in the sixties? It seemed so "futuristic. Never thought I''d be around in 2008 while watching the movie. Ah to be 16 again. What great memories there.

Last owners name was Kohlberg Family in Chicago which is still active in Outdoor business. Projectionist for several years was Electus M. Slater in mid 60''s through early 80''s.

It's a shame this is gone. Maybe someone has some photos of Kelley's Miniature Golf, which was just north of the theatre. Also, Bud Eagley's Dog and Suds was right across the street.
