Update 1-28-2023: I just found a yearbook ad (pictured below) that indicated there was also a location at 771 E 8 Mile Rd in Ferndale.
This entry is to document the 2 Detroit-area Dipsey Doodles I am aware of. The one closest to me growing up was the 9 Mile and Telegraph location where a Taco Bell sits as of 2023. The other was at 1528 S Woodward Ave in Royal Oak near 10 mile, roughly where LA Fitness sits as of 2023. Both buildings are long gone. These joints were a bit before my time as I would have been a baby when they were popular. They were the teen hangouts of their day. They had ice cream, malts, burgers, fries, etc. I guess it could get pretty rowdy in there. It was also a place where folks would take their little league baseball teams after the game for a treat.
The Southfield location seems to go back to the mid 1950's. There was an older building present on the lot in 1951 but it looks as though it was changed. The Royal Oak location goes back to 1957 or before. It seemed to be the larger, more elaborate of the 2. There was a large parking area which seemed to allow for car-hops and an amazing neon sign. It was like the Detroit-area version of Mel's Drive-In from "American Graffiti" only better. I don't think the 9 Mile Rd location had the big sign but I could be wrong.
