The 300 room Capitol Park Motor Hotel opened with great fanfare in June 1961. It was a new building adjacent to the old Porter Apartments that went back to the early 1900's. The 2 buildings became the Capitol Park. Eventually hard times came for the hotel and the newer portion was converted to a Days Inn in the 1980's. The old Porter portion remains standing as of 2023 but the 1961 portion has been demolished. Michigan Catholic Conference sits on the old lot today.
